About HMRC Legal Group:

Across HMRC Legal Group we provide legal services to the whole of HMRC. This includes:

The conduct of independent reviews of decisions made by HMRC which are requested by customers under the legislative provisions.

The conduct of tribunal and civil litigation on a full range of services.

Work on new legislation.

Drafting of statutory instruments and other legal documents.

Legal advice to ExCom and staff.

We also provide technical accountancy and forensic services to HMRC, are head of the Compliance Accountants’ and Insolvency Professions as well as handling Ministerial Correspondence and Freedom of Information requests for HMRC.

About this role:

This Power BI Analyst role sits within the Data Access team and is responsible for developing high-quality reports and datasets that support both internal and external stakeholders. These outputs underpin operational and regulatory reporting across the Legal Group and feed into the Legal Group Hub, enabling data lead decision making.

Person specification

  • Build Power BI reports from existing datasets, selecting appropriate measures to ensure the correct results.
  • Building Datasets from existing dataflow sources. Identify missing information and work collaboratively with others to address this.
  • Support the peer review process to ensure quality outputs across the team.
  • Provide updates and continued support for key products, such as the Legal Group Hub.
  • Provide bespoke extracts of data or analysis to support briefings and data requests from Ministers, ExCom, HMRC Board and other senior-level meetings where required.
  • Work closely with other analysts and senior leaders to develop the use of data to drive operational performance and create a data driven culture within Legal Group.
  • You’ll be comfortable working collaboratively within a virtual team distributed across the UK.

Essential Criteria:

  • Power BI Experience: You have demonstrable experience in developing insightful, user-friendly dashboards and reports using Power BI. You possess a foundational understanding of DAX and are comfortable working with data models to support analytical outputs.
  • Analysis and Synthesis: You are able to use software to manipulate and analyse data. For example, merging, analysing and consolidate data using pivot tables, functions, and charts.
  • Communication: You can demonstrate good verbal and written communication skills. You understand how to share insights with technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Data quality assurance, validation, and linkage: You can identify appropriate ways to collect, collate and prepare data. You can decide if data is accurate and fit for purpose.
  • Logical and creative thinking: You can apply logic and creativity to approach a problem.

Interview

During the panel interview, you will be asked behaviour-based questions to explore in detail what you are capable of, it will include a test of technical ability using dummy data to be exploited within PowerBI, and there will also be a presentation on confidently analysing and presenting data to stakeholders.

Interviews will take place via video link. Sift and interview dates to be confirmed.
